In der ehemaligen Tongrube hatte die Basler Chemie Industrie ( BCI ) von 1961 bis 1976 über hundertvierzehntausend Tonnen chemische Abfälle entsorgt.
Das 1976 stillgelegte und mit einem Wald bepflanzte Endlager erwies sich, nach einer ersten Sanierung in den achtziger Jahren, als undicht.
Unter Druck der Öffentlichkeit und des Kanton Jura beschloss die BCI die Deponie umfassend zu sanieren:

This permanent storage facility was closed down in 1976 and a small wood was planted on it, but following a first clean-up in the 1980s it was discovered that the site was not watertight.
Under the pressure of public opinion and the Canton Jura BCI decided to carry out a complete clean-up of the waste disposal site.
