From its inception , the Society of Jesus considered the study of philosophy to be an indispensable foundation for theological training , and cultivated philosophical schooling accordingly .
In the southern German region, from the middle of the sixteenth century until the nullification of the Jesuit order ( 1773 ), the University of Ingolstadt, precursor of the modern Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich, was the most important center for philosophical and theological studies.
