The first group ( Solo Violin I and Cello accompanied by pizzicato Violins and Violas ) quote a song from Guinea with typical dropping phrases over a characteristically unchanging accompaniment - very strong, straightforward, repetitive.
The second group ( solo violin II with three muted cellos ) in contrast interrupts this texture in a highly expressive manner, and performs changes of tempo and dynamics, cuts, agitated gestures and reflective moments.

Ersteres ( Violinen und Bratschen pizzicato mit Solo Violine und Cello ) spielt ein guineisches Lied mit typisch abfallenden melodischen Phrasen über einer repetitiv changierenden Begleitung - fast klischeehaft ( wäre es nicht origina … stark, geradeaus und unbeirrt.
Dagegen hält die zweite Gruppe ( drei gedämpfte Celli mit Solo Violine ) ein hoch espressives Klanggemälde mit ständigen Temposchwankungen, Brüchen, agitierten Gesten und reflexiven Momenten.

During a live performance the sound effects such as pizzicato or reverberation occur in extreme pianissimo and are therefore amplified through a microphone which is placed above the bass strings inside the piano.
We decided against this as 8 microphones were in position during recording, some of them very close to the piano and it is unlikely to distort the original sound intention.

Wir verzichteten in dieser Einspielung bewußt auf diese Möglichkeit, da die Verwendung von acht Mikrophonen, teilweise sehr nahe am Flügel positioniert, diesem Umstand Rechnung trägt, ohne das originale Klangbild zu verzerren.
