… ach einiger Zeit jedoch, wenn das dritte oder vierte Blatt unserer Versuchspflanzen sich entfaltet, zeigt sich eine Krankheit: die von jetzt ab zur Entfaltung kommenden neuen Blätter bleiben völlig weiß, erzeugen also kein Chlorophyll, und die mikroskopische Untersuchung zeigt, daß überhaupt keine Chlorophyllkörner in dem Protoplasma solch farbloser Blätter vorhanden sind.
Das ist nun ein Beweis, daß unserem Nährstoffgemenge noch etwas gefehlt hat; aus den älteren Beobachtungen von GRIS wissen wir nun, daß die Erkrankung unserer Pflanzen, die sogenannte Chlorose, von Eisenmangel herrührt.... es genügt, in das Wasser, welches die Wurzeln aufnehmen, ein kleines Quantum eines löslichen Eisensalzes einzuführen, … m die vorher völlig weißen Blätter ergrünen zu sehe … iese Erfahrungen beweisen offenbar, daß zur Ausbildung des Chlorophylls Eisen nötig ist, aber nicht, ob das Eisen einen Bestandteil des grünen Farbstoffes selbst bildet."
