Wir leisten Beiträge zur Erhöhung der Photosynthesekapazität durch die Entwicklung eines Algenphotobioreaktors, zur Erschließung regenerativer Energiequellen mithilfe hochinnovativer Membrantechnik ( Brennstoffzellen, Osmosekraftwerk ), zur Verbesserung der Energieeffizienz durch die Erzeugung von Biogas aus organischen Abfällen, Nebenprodukten der Lebensmittelindustrie und der landwirtschaftlichen Primärproduktion sowie zur Energieeinsparung durch Prozessoptimierungen in Klärtechnik, anaerober Abwasserreinigung und in industriellen Prozessen, beispielsweise der Trocknung von Biomasse und porösen Werkstoffen mit Dampf bei Atmosphärendruck.
Darüber hinaus arbeitet das Fraunhofer IGB an Systemen zur stabilen Langzeitspeicherung von Wärmeenergie und zur Veredelung von Biogas für CNG-Fahrzeuge (compressed natural gas).
Auch integrierte Stoffstrom- und Energiekonzepte für Kommunen und Regionen werden in Angriff genommen, um die bisherigen, historisch gewachsenen Lösungen durch Systemansätze mit neuesten Technologien zu ersetzen.

Additionally, the Fraunhofer IGB is working on process technologies and systems for long-term, stable storage of thermal energy and for the purification of biogas for CNG (compressed natural gas) vehicles.
A further field of activity is devising integrated material flow and energy concepts at both local and regional level, replacing the current historically grown solutions with systematic approaches using state-of-the-art technologies.

Aufbereitetes Biogas kann als vollwertiger Erdgas-Ersatz als Brennstoff für Haushalte und Industrie sowie als Treibstoff für den automotiven Bereich (CNG-Fahrzeuge, compressed natural gas) eingesetzt werden.
In diesem Fall könnte die bestehende Erdgas-Infrastruktur wie Pipelines, Gasspeicher und Tankstellen verwendet werden, um das produzierte Gas zu den Verbrauchern zu transportieren.

Upgraded biogas can be used as a fully-fledged natural gas substitute in all the natural gas applications like fuel for households and industry as well as propellant for the automotive sector (CNG-vehicles, compressed natural gas).
Doing this, the already well-established natural gas infrastructure like pipelines, gas storage tanks and fuelling stations can be utilised to transport the produced gas to the consumers.
