Physik mit Ionenstrahlen - Innovative Forschung in Deutschland Die Bestrahlung von lebenden Gewebe- und Blutzellen mit Ionen und Neutronen ist eine wichtige Methode in der Strahlenbiologie. Hiermit ist es möglich, Wirkung und Risiko von Teilchenstrahlung aus der natürlichen Umweltradioaktivität ( Radongas, Kosmische Strahlung ) und in kerntechnischen Anlagen und Forschungsinstituten abzuschätzen.
Zunehmend werden Protonen und 12C-Ionen auch erfolgreich in der Krebstherapie eingesetzt.

Der Fachbereich ist zuständig für die Metrologie - die Wissenschaft vom Messen - und die Dosimetrie von Neutronenstrahlung und bearbeitet Fragestellungen aus Strahlenschutz, Strahlentherapie, Strahlenbiologie, Technologie und Forschung.
Für diese Aufgaben betreiben wir aufwendige Bestrahlungseinrichtungen ( Teilchenbeschleuniger ), die auch von externen Interessenten genutzt werden.
