the longing of unfulfilled and unfulfillable love, a love that, stymied by the circumstances of real life, can only find its fulfillment in death.
In musical terms, with the famous "Tristan chord”, which broke through the borderlines of traditional harmony, Wagner found the germ-cell of the entire further action, which he organizes in the form of leading motives.
