Therefore the overarching theme of the project is to quantify the production of 14C and its redistribution in the earth system to infer the role of solar variability in driving earth system variability of the past, and to learn about soil overturning time scales and soil-climate-greenhouse gas feedbacks.
The project is in the unique position of having a carbon cycle-climate model that includes the relevant carbon reservoirs both on land and in the ocean in 3-dimensions and that is cost-efficient to allow for the millennial-scale simulations required to model the 14C distribution within the Earth System.
The research is performed in close collaboration with the NCCR project R2 SOLAR to exploit the complementary strengths of the two groups and two proxies ( 14C and 10Be ).

Das Projekt ist in der einmaligen Lage, ein Kohlenstoffzyklus-Klimamodell einsetzen zu können, das die relevanten Kohlenstoffreservoirs an Land und im Ozean in drei Dimensionen mit einschliesst. Es ist kosteneffizient, so dass sich Simulationen über tausende von Jahren durchführen lassen, die für die Modellierung der 14C-Verteilung im Erdsystem nötig sind.
Die Forschung wird in enger Zusammenarbeit mit dem NFS Projekt R2 SOLAR durchgeführt.
