1991 wurde er Leiter des Instituts für Bodenbiologie an der Bundesforschungsanstalt für Landwirtschaft ( FAL ) in Braunschweig und Mitglied des Lehrkörpers an der TU Braunschweig .
Seit 1996 ist er Ordinarius am Lehrstuhl für Bodenökologie an TUM und Leiter des Instituts für Bodenökologie am, Helmholtz Zentrum München.

Volkswagen arbeitet bereits seit einiger Zeit an Konzepten zur industriellen Produktion von Biokraftstoffen der 2. Generation und kooperiert bei der Kraftstoffentwicklung eng mit anderen Automobilherstellern sowie mit Biotech-Firmen und Mineralölkonzernen.
