Um das Zusammenspiel von Aerosol, Wolken, Strahlung und Turbulenz in diesem Wolkentyp zu untersuchen, wurde das CARRIBA-Projekt initiiert.
Das Vorhaben basiert auf zwei je einmonatigen Feldkampagnen mit den hubschraubergetragenen Messplattformen ACTOS (Airborne Cloud Turbulence Obseration System) und SMART-Helios (Spectral Modular Airborne Radiation measurement sysTem) und unterstützenden bodengebundenen Messungen.
Die erste Kampagne fand im November 2010 zum Ende der Feuchtsaison (CARRIBAWet) auf Barbados statt, die zweite Kampagne folgte in der Trockensaison (CARRIBADry) im April 2011. CARRIBA ist in die Langzeitstudien des Max-Planck Instituts für Meteorologie in Hamburg (MPI-M) eingebunden, welches seit 2010 kontinuirlich das Barbados Cloud Observatory (BCO) an der Ostküste Barbados betreibt (z.B. Nuijens et al., 2013).

The project is based on two one-month experiments with the ACTOS (Airborne Cloud Turbulence Observation System) and SMART-HELIOS (Spectral Modular Airborne Radiation measurement sysTem) payloads along with ground-based aerosol characterization.
The first campaign was performed in November 2010, at the end of the climatic wet season and is called CARRIBAWET, the second campaign (CARRIBADRY) was performed in the climatic dry season in April 2011. CARRIBA is embedded within a long-term initiative of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M), which operates the Barbados Cloud Observatory (BCO) located at the East coast of Barbados since early in 2010, thereby providing a longer-term context for the CARRIBA measurements (e.g., Nuijens et al., 2013).

On December 15th, the research aircraft Polar 2 landed at Neumayer Station, marking the start of the German-Japanese project ANTSYO II ( Japan-German Airborne Observation Program ).
Until January of 2007, measurements identifying minute airborne particles, so-called aerosols, and various trace gases, will be carried out from the aircraft.
