Die Trennung von Madame Vasnier, für die er bislang fast alle seine Lieder geschrieben hatte, sowie die Abwesenheit von seiner geliebten Stadt Paris fielen ihm schwer.
Der Zyklus, dessen restliche vier Lieder in der Zeit zwischen 1885 und 1888 entstanden, war vermutlich als eine Art Geschenk an Madame Vasnier nach seiner Rückkehr gedacht.
