Rebecca und Salomon Selman Selmanson schickten ihre fünf Kinder alle zunächst auf die Gemeinschaftsschule am Domkirchhof, eine Reformschule mit Koedukation und konfessionsübergreifendem Religions- und Ethikunterricht, die großen Wert auf handwerkliche Ausbildung und Förderung der Gemeinschaft legte.
Die beiden älteren Söhne Ephraim und Siegmund besuchten später das Johanneum, gleich gegenüber vom Elternhaus gelegen.
