Zur Teilnahme am Auswahlwettbewerb zur IMO wird eingeladen, wer zu Beginn des Wettbewerbs noch Schüler ist, sich erfolgreich an der zweiten Runde des Bundeswettbewerbs Mathematik oder der Bundesrunde der Mathematik-Olympiade beteiligt oder einen Landessieg im Wettbewerb Jugend forscht, Fachgebiet Mathematik, errungen hat.
Außerdem muss die Altersbedingung zur Teilnahme an der IMO erfüllt sein (am zweiten Klausurtag der IMO noch keine 20 Jahre alt).
