Dass Gaskognisch neben Französisch, Frankoprovenzalisch und Okzitanisch als viertes Sprachgebiet der Galloromania bezeichnet werden kann, beweist seine frühe eigenständige Entwicklung aus dem Vulgärlatein.
Man kann davon ausgehen, dass das (Proto)Gaskognische spätestens ca. 600 seine charakterischen Spezifika herausgebildet hat.
