Das Institut widmet sich schwerpunktmäßig der Erforschung der Physik komplexer dynamischer Systeme mit Hilfe modernster Methoden der nichtlinearen Dynamik, der Semiklassik und der Quantentheorie.
Hauptsächliche Arbeitsgebiete sind Bose-Einstein-Kondensate mit langreichweitigen Wechselwirkungen, die Quantentheorie in superstarken Magnetfeldern mit Anwendungen in Astrophysik und Kosmologie, die Chaosforschung einschließlich des „ Quantenchaos ”, die semiklassische Quantisierung chaotischer Systeme, sowie die Quanteninformationsverarbei... und die Quanten-Thermodynamik.
In den Arbeitsrichtungen Synergetik und Neuroinformatik wird das generische Verhalten biologischer und anderer komplexer Systeme aus theoretisch-physikalischer, informationstheoretischer und biophysikalischer Sicht fächerübergreifend beleuchtet.

Of main topical interest are e.g. Bose-Einstein condensates with long-range interactions, quantum field theory in strong magnetic fields with applications to astrophysics and cosmology, the research of chaos, including “ quantum chaos ”, semiclassical quantisation of chaotic systems, and, finally, quantum information processing and quantum thermodynamics.
Investigations in synergetics and neuroinformatics concentrate on revealing generic behaviour in biological and other complex systems using methods of theoretical physics, information theory, and biophysics.
