Die Bildreihe mit den Päpsten verlief von der Altarwand ausgehend entlang der Kapellenwände, wo in der Mitte Christus und der erste Papst Petrus neben Linus und Cletus dargestellt waren.
Die vier Figuren sind jedoch nicht mehr erhalten, da Michelangelo auf Wunsch Pauls III. 1536 hier das Jüngste Gericht ausführte.
