During the First World War in 1915 the German colonial period came to an end in Windhoek and the town was occupied by South African troops under British command.
In 1959 until 1963 heavy protests and violent conflicts by the black inhabitants arose, who protested against the planned enforcement of the rassist Arpartheid rule.
When Namibia gained its independence from South Africa in 1990 the town experienced a revival regarding political, cultural and touristic aspects.
