Wegen der unzureichenden GALC-Funktion wird das Galaktosylceramid nicht richtig abgebaut und wird in den myelin-produzierenden Zellen gespeichert.
Myelin bildet eine Schutzhülle herum der Nervenzellen und stellt schnelle Übertragung der Nervenimpulse sicher.
