The famous Roman scholar, poet, and politician Decimus Magnus Ausonius traveled on the old Roman road straight across the Hunsrück from Bingen to Trier in AD 368 as a part of the retinue of Valentinian I.
He recorded his impressions of the journey in his famous work " Mosella."

It was extended in this form under Duke Ludwig the Rich of Bavaria-Landshut in around 1460 and served as a dining room and assembly room for the ducal retinue.
Its external walls date back to the 13th century, when this tract housed the duke s apartments.
