From the mid-1950s, Joe Bloggs started to purchase luxury goods, such as coffee and nylon tights, instead of just spending money on regular foodstuffs.

Der Begriff „ Otto Normalverbraucher “ stammt ursprünglich aus dem deutschen Spielfilm „ Berliner Ballade “ von 1948. Marktforscher nahmen ihn auf, um den Durchschnittskunden zu beschreiben.

Ab Mitte der 1950er-Jahre gab Otto Normalverbraucher sein Geld nicht mehr nur für Lebensmittel, sondern zunehmend auch für Luxusgüter wie Bohnenkaffee und Nylonstrümpfe aus.

Gegen Ende des Jahrzehnts stand den Konsumenten dann sogar Geld für Elektrogeräte wie Küchenmixer und Rasierapparate zur Verfügung.
