Die winzigen männlichen und weiblichen Einzelblüten dieses Blütenstandes sitzen basal an der Blütenstandsachse ( Spadix ) und werden von einem riesigen Hochblatt ( Spatha ) umhüllt.
Durch ihre Form, ihre dunkle braunpurpurne Farbe und ihren üblen Aasgeruch imitiert die Blume einen verwesenden Tierkadaver und lockt kleine nachtaktive Käfer ( Aaskäfer Diamesus spec. und Kurzflügler Creophilus spec. ) sowie Bienen an ( Hetterscheid 1998 ).
